Patch Notes

The TMB’s quantum supercomputers can record changes made to the timeline that the human mind forgets, but even they make mistakes sometimes. Upon revisiting the “Royal Valley Causality Event” that took place towards the end of the 20th century, several mistakes and inconsistencies were noted. These events were re-evaluated and either corrected, or made more accurate. A more detailed report of every revision, no matter how small (breathing patterns, eye blinks, slang usage, etc) is available to system admins. These notes were signed off on in triplicate by the department head prior to peer review.

Reminder: the currently posted report of this lengthy incident is now the final and conclusive file. Forget what you knew from any prior versions and don’t go looking for them. Invalid reports are a hindrance to temporal agent coherence. Editorial notes have been retained for your entertainment.

The 90’s Kid Season One Patch Notes

1 – Past Blast

– Wes now already had an emergency house key taken away

– Added early Castle Hill and summer camp references

– Wes no longer won the Mew in the NP contest as this felt like too much on top of his Toy Run win. However, a kid in Cookton did (the school name now also has an early mention) and he traded with him to register it in his Pokédex.

– Jace’s dad Conrad now vapes instead of smokes as it fits his personality better.

– Jace hasn’t made many friends?! Well, that’s not true. Fixed this line to mention he hasn’t made up with the ones he has instead.

– Changed Jace’s room’s posters from music artists to games and movies, as he ended up never really talking about modern music anyway.

– Removed Wes as a witness to Charlie’s chocolate heist. Arguably this could have happened differently at one point, but Wes would have (spoilers) the memories of the real incident by now. Also fixed a mistake around Charlie coming back for middle and high school, instead of going into the shadow realm; he just didn’t hang out with the guys anymore.

– Fixed the amount of money Wes took to match the Season 2 first chapter.

– Jace originally looks at a photo on his phone of him and Lucy at a baseball game, but RV never did get a mentioned team, minor league or otherwise. It’s just them at the mall now.

– Added some subtlety about Wes’ plans to his time travel primer dialogue, and he no longer mentions not messing with his own kid self.

– Removed descriptor of the mall having a carousel in Jace’s time as it was never mentioned again.

– Fixed up Wes’ dates when he explains the timing of the pantry door discovery to match better with Season 2’s first chapter.

– Corrected when Wes’ home first gets connected to the internet, as it didn’t happen in July, 1996.

– Boosted young André’s age by two years so he can actually remember his grandfather. Malcolm would’ve disappeared when he was just a toddler otherwise!

– Whew, that was a lot.

2 – Small Glitch

– Kettle Road now described as six miles long instead of three after it kept growing in importance in the story.

– Mentioned that the time glitch was happening to Wes back in 2020 as this is how it works for Jace later in Season 3.

– Fixed some inaccuracies with game releases at the game section, include removing the PS1 mention as it was only in Japan at the time. Freed up a line I gave to the Game Boy.

– Revamped the Toy Run talk in Target to both better match Lucy’s share of the haul in Toy King and Wes has now talked about the contest many times before (and the reason he hadn’t shown Jace the footage yet). Of course, he would have.

– Fixed Wessy’s clothing description. Very important, I know, but no art ever depicted him with white Nikes or a slap bracelet!

3 – Bullet Water

– Gave Arthur a different Super Soaker gun that isn’t described like the one Wes just got and shows up in the art.

– Colin is no longer superhuman. Originally, he emerges in the water gun game by climbing over Jared’s fence, and just a few paragraphs later, Jared says he never managed to do that. Oops.

– Corrected a notable error about Jace’s house not being built yet. That stopped being true in Season 2!

– Wes now pretends he’s having twins instead of one baby.

4 – Joy Control

– Gave Wes an additional line during his TV show extravaganza speech that clarifies what this moment in the story is really about. Name dropping and nostalgia-baiting is cool and all, but the true purpose here is to act as a counter to Jace’s issues in Chapter 2. They can both ramble, but their minds and priorities are in different places.

– For Jace, TV is now third to YouTube instead of the latter going unmentioned. Very small, but not much else to mention in this chapter.

– Eddie now smokes a cigar instead of a cigarette in his office, which just sounds mildly absurd.

– Slipped in an early reference to the mall arcade getting the old Treasure Trove’s (RIP) Hungry, Hungry Hippos game.

5 – Shoe Horn

– Corrected the geography of Kettle during the shoe quest as it now borders Desert Tree directly.

– Lucy’s house no longer has a screened patio since it wasn’t passed through in Home Insecurity. Again, important stuff here!

– Wes is no longer superhuman, either. He now crosses the street first to close some distance with Lucy’s house before throwing the shoe.

– Earlier establishment of Lucy’s job. I hadn’t originally decided on it or gave it much thought until the second movie.

6 – Arcade King

– Tweaked King Arcade’s layout and boosted the Red Demon’s peak height by twenty feet.

– Wes now puts Jace’s name on the board in Game Joust after his win. Probably a good idea to keep Wessy from seeing his name up there!

– Galaxy Hub no longer has Area 51 in the present to match up with a remark about it much later in the story.

– Wes now remembers Gavin better since the two did hang out together sometimes later on for a brief while, not to mention the big water gun game in Season 2. Patched his pre-altered relationship with Vanni so she was always a sage to him; that just started later originally.

7 – Clock Speed

– Tweaked description of DTE. Originally it had an open-air central corridor, but this was never mentioned again or visualized, forgotten to time. Guess I was thinking of the design of my own Elementary School way back when! Wes also spent 6 years there, not 5; he did go to kindergarten, after all (with Celeste in fact, as eagle-eyed readers may recall).

– Fixed a minor error about Wes “avoiding the megaplex” even though it doesn’t open until August. This was even established in a prior chapter in the previous version, so just a pure mistake. This led to another line of text freeing up, used on a new mention. Free Willy 2 has been added as a movie seen by the duo!

– Total time blip! For some reason, Wes’ car originally turned into a Camry on Castle Hill, when he still has the old Accord. He does briefly have a Camry later, but I’m not sure how I made this mistake.

– Royal Valley’s geography has been a minor annoyance in the series. Corrected it so the airport is in the north. The old art with the view of the city is from the west, with the mountains in the back being the eastern terminus of the valley.

8 – Cool Daze

– Dropped some names early on so the record now properly states who was talking about TV shows

– Gave the “what systems you got?” line to Arthur since Wes never owned a Sega, despite renting a console.

– Celeste almost gets name-dropped early.

– Fixed playground stuff to get rid of mentions of a second fort and basketball court. There is also no jungle gym dome; Royal Valley Elementary has one, though!

– Millie definitely did, in fact, go to Cookton and Steader regardless if she was still a social outcast. Fixed these lines to mention he just barely saw her anymore.

– The old photo ad of the twins was sent by their mom instead of Arthur. This seems minor, but it’s a subtle hint about one of the season’s bigger revelations.

– Ended the chapter with a new line that is more fitting.

9 – Playground Rules

– The Dump was once described as having three separate dumpsters. Wow, that’s been lost on me for a long time. But, no longer. Also tweaked the description to mention a big locked gate nearby. You gotta be able to empty Bertha, after all. Line freed up for a tiny bit of new dialogue from Wessy introducing Felicity.

– Dropped an early mention of Park’s stash being kept at his dad’s shop.

– Lemmings were mistakenly described as having blue hair instead of green all this time! Oops.

– Big one: I’d completely forgotten that Wes bought a Super Nintendo, which totally invalidates the fun/funny/important book end interaction with him finally returning the rental at the end of the series. This is now rectified by having him just rent it again.

– The Dump now lasts a few more years; Colin tells Wes in tenth grade instead of seventh that it got shut down.

10 – Slumber Partly

– Jared snaps at Felicity now instead of Colin; more on-brand for his guard dog nature.

– Gave the Conrad visitation announcement to Park instead of Gerald, as the former became something of The Dump’s crier and hype guy.

– Interesting needed change here: Conrad is still visiting because he has a half-day, but this is no longer a foreign concept to the DTE kids, because half-days are important in Another 90’s Kid for some school visitation.

– Jace now says his feet are warm when asked if he got cold ones for the sleepover. Totally not worth mentioning here, but lovably dorky!

– Changed Millie’s dad’s affectionate name for her from pumpkin to Honey Bear as a reference to Baby Bear from the movie.

– Very small detail I’m mentioning to emphasize my due diligence: Wes’ “summer camp” creations in his house art now art camp creations since he had yet to go to Morning Dew.

– Altered description of the library since the University appearance was finalized (partially due to the map I made)

– Tweaked description of Malcolm to match his art.

– Charlie sneaks them into the high school pool instead of the community center pool, which is much further away. Steader having a pool was established in the second movie.

– Removed thought line about Wes not remembering police officers taking away Charlie, since he did remember. Concluded falling asleep scene with a dream Jace has.

11 – Time Trick

– Since we now see the announcement that the full group will no longer trick-or-treat in the second movie for ourselves, removed this line. Instead it’s simply the Halloween Wes remembers most.

– Corrected Wizard Rocker and Apple costume descriptions to match with art.

– Celeste now has a “tough” sounding voice instead of a squeaky one, and she gets a few tweaks throughout the chapter to better establish her as the rough and tumble girl of the group that got established over time originally.

– It’s small, but important enough to mention here as it’s an early indicator of Wes’ perceived leadership of the group that results in a boiling point in Home Insecurity later: When he’s revealing his trick-or-treat plan, Sadie asks what he’s making them do “this time.”

– Vanni’s house is a distance from Wes’ area and in a different school district, so added a break for time passage.

– Because of this, they would already have a good haul of candy, but Wes still wants to get “the good stuff.”

– Reconfigured the votes so they made more sense in regards to character dialogue.

– Vanni had her arcade cabinet for a year now instead of three. Reason being, the machine now has a cameo in Another 90’s Kid!

– Zach’s party is now mentioned, alluding to Wes’ freakout there in the second movie

– Laurie now leads the 2019 trick-or-treating to hint at her being best friends with Jace, or the “leader” of the group; her importance wasn’t originally established. I also call Year-Younger Jace “Jacey” instead of “Little Jace” now. It’s so appropriate!

12 – Winter Roads

– Since Wes reveals no one really skateboarded in the second movie, changed Arthur’s suspected present to a basketball instead that he doesn’t want.

– Jace gave his real name to Mrs. Teller before. Oops! At this point, the nickname had kind of run its course anyway, but he never would’ve used it with the twins’ mom regardless.

13 – Lucky Number

– Now that they have established personalities, it’s Chad who set up a poker game instead of Austin at school. It’d be more of a Chad thing to do. Wes also doesn’t act surprised anymore that a fourth-grader got suspended; just that Jace knew one. After all, Wes knew a fourth-grader who got expelled!

– Jace gets some much overdue revenge for the weird nick names by calling Wes a banger of his own!

– Wes now tells Jace to ask his dad to take him to Hoover Dam instead, since Wes is still conflicted about whether or not he’d actually return. This also works since Conrad is always going out to Vegas already anyway. And Wes doesn’t care if Conrad gets yelled at.

– Turned the Mob Museum into just a local museum exhibit instead since that attraction didn’t exist yet. Bad younger self!

– Stealthily dropped a hint that RV once had a casino, too.

– Made Wes a little more drunk.

14 – Chinatown Run

– Not much in this chapter, but added a funny sentence to the monkey paw dialogue.

– Wes’ prom date no longer described as having freckles since they were mostly gone by then. Fixed mention of her not going to Cookton (where else would she have gone for middle school?!)

– A few tweaks to Toys ‘R’ Us layout to make it match to how it’s described in Toy King

15 – Breakdown

– This won’t be done too much because it kind of feels like “cheating,” but I drop a cryptic little Another 90’s Kid reference in here: when talking about Celeste’s names on arcade machines in town, Wes also mentions the ’GAV’s and ‘PNY’ names that were prolific on cabinets. The latter name actually belongs to Penny, who is Gavin’s age, and a friend of Maisy’s older brother!

– Future Sadie now lives in Seattle instead of Houston. There’s a subtle reason for this change readers may pick up on much later in the series.

– Not very significant but I changed Wes’ message board’s first year from 98 to 99, since he’d be a little too much of an internet noob in 1998 to run one. In the third movie, it’ll come up briefly in conversation!

– Finally corrected Wes saying “iridescent” instead of “incandescent” when referring to a lightbulb in his visual metaphor of memory. That’s been bugging me for years!

– Corrected Ash working in LA, not San Francisco

– This isn’t actually the first crown drop, not even from Victory Plaza, so instead it’s just the first year the current crown has been used.

– Downtown is definitely not in walking distance! They get a taxi instead, with Wes suggesting they just ride with the Vanbusens. This is one of the bigger Season 1 changes, small as it still is.

– Tweaked who among the friends is talking in the New Year’s get-together, and fixed RJ’s band lineup since Vanni is no longer “the only chick in a band of three dudes;” they were introduced properly in the second movie and their importance is more notable in Another 90’s Kid. Freed up a line that I gave to a single lyric from the song.

– Changed Felicity’s mom’s name since a more prominent character is named Heather in Another 90’s Kid

16 – New Year

– Had Trudy ask about time travel and reference The Time Machine instead, since she’s supposed to be the bookworm. Ironically, I think I mixed the two up sometimes.

– Wes originally suggested they only help some classmates. He doesn’t know yet that Jace eventually helps them all, but it still made more sense to just change it to him urging caution.

– Wes goes from having no idea why the chocolate store owner hates kids to thinking maybe it was because of Charlie, but he, of course, isn’t aware of the real story.

– Made the uninvited guests sound a little more human, since they aren’t really machines.

– Correct geography involved with Wes’ hiding place near the San Baro river. Although it’s only mentioned briefly, this is actually the first time in the series that the Links golf course is “seen!”

The 90’s Kid Season Two & Three Patch Notes

Seasons 2 & 3 are not currently being revised, however here are some “hot fixes” I’ve made in the meantime as they popped up.

Season Two

7 – The Game

– Fixed up last few paragraphs to make them more clear that Wes is talking about the way he originally remembered the end of the game.

14 – Down Below

– Changed Jared living in Fresno to San Jose for… reasons.

15 – Christmas ’89

– Changed the store that ran Sam Goody out of business from Best Buy to a Wherehouse since Best Buy wasn’t around in SoCal in 1991 yet.

16 – Decade Dawn

– Adjusted André’s birth year to match with his age back in the first episode. Amusingly, it was wrong in the first place even compared to his original age.

Season Three

10 – Before Door

– Someone no longer has to bike 4 or more miles to Wes’ apartment near the city while following a car at 40 MPH on average! Did I not care about geography back then? Geez!

12 – Restful Reward

– Warren theorizes that any of the Daemons may have found him instead of just the blue-eyed one. This ties into “Time Buddies,” in which he shares one theory about his disappearance.
